Obituary Details:
Inspirational Oswald Ungers dies

Oswald Mathias Ungers, the architect responsible for some of Germany’s most important public buildings, has died aged 81.

Ungers had set up his own practice in Cologne by the age of 24. Renowned for his use of simple platonic forms — cubes, spheres, circles and squares — he developed an architectural language expressed through pared-down design. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne is considered his masterpiece.

His daughter Sophia told BD: “My father inspired a whole generation of young architects in Germany, both as a teacher and as director of his own practice.”
